Buying a handbag or leather goods from America
An expensive bag prices far better than a cheap one, and not by a little. The reason is the same arithmetic that makes a cheap bulky item the worst thing you can import.

Here are two bags, priced by our own calculator on 7 September 2026:
| US price | Charged as | Lands at | Multiple | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Designer handbag | $890 | 2.6 kg | EGP 83,939 | 1.85× |
| Cabin bag | $275 | 10.1 kg | EGP 60,717 | 4.3× |
The handbag costs more than three times as much in dollars and lands at less than half the multiple. If you understand why, you understand this whole category.
Value beats size
Bringing something into Egypt costs a certain amount driven by how much room it takes and what it weighs, plus an amount driven by what it is worth. For a cheap bulky item the first part dominates and the multiple is terrible. For an expensive compact item the second dominates, and the multiple falls towards the best figures we see anywhere.
A designer handbag is small, light and worth a great deal — close to the ideal shape. A large empty travelling bag is the opposite: a big box of air worth comparatively little. That is the entire explanation, and it is set out at length in why size changes the price.
What follows from that
Worth importing
Designer handbags and small leather goods, where Egypt's selection is narrow and prices are set locally
Wallets, belts, card holders — tiny, valuable, easy
A specific colour or season that never reached Egypt
Quality boots and leather shoes, though see the shoes guide for sizing
Not worth importing
Cheap travelling bags. Bulky and inexpensive is the worst combination there is, and Egypt sells them.
Anything large and soft that you would be buying mostly on price
Making sure it is genuine
Designer bags are among the most counterfeited goods in the world, and from Egypt you have no practical way to send something back. So the seller matters more than the price.
Buy from the brand's own site or a large American department store. That is where we buy, and it removes the question entirely.
Be careful with marketplace listings and resale platforms. Some are excellent and authenticate properly; some do not. Know which you are looking at.
A price well below everyone else's is the warning, not the win. Genuine designer goods are discounted at predictable times and by predictable amounts.
"Inspired by", "mirror quality", "1:1" mean counterfeit. We will not buy those, and it is worth saying plainly: if you send us a link to a fake, we will tell you what it is and decline.
The practical things
Dust bags and cards. Full packaging matters for resale and sometimes for authentication. Check what the listing includes.
Hardware and colour. Gold or silver hardware, and the exact shade, change between seasons and are easy to get wrong from a photograph. Say which you want.
Leather and heat. Egypt is hot and dry. Good leather is fine, but keep a bag out of direct sun and it will last far longer.
How it works here
Send the link with the exact colour and hardware, and we come back with one fixed price in Egyptian pounds — product, shipping, Egyptian customs and our work, all inside, usually within hours. We buy from the shops themselves, so what arrives is what the shop sold.
You pay 20% to confirm, the balance before delivery, and nothing at your door. Bags and shoes are the biggest part of what is already priced on the Shop if you want real numbers to look at first.
