How-to Guides / Advice

Is it actually cheaper than buying in Egypt?

Sometimes clearly yes, sometimes clearly no, and the way to tell takes about two minutes. Here is the method.

The right question is not "is importing cheaper". It is "is importing cheaper for this specific thing", and the answer swings wildly depending on what the thing is.

Here is how to work it out before you commit to anything.

The two-minute method

1. Get the landed number. Use the calculator, or send us the link and a person will come back with a fixed figure. Do not estimate this in your head — the multiple between dollar price and landed price runs from about 1.7× to about 4.7× depending on the item, and guessing is how people get surprised.

2. Get the honest local number. Not the first price you see. Check two or three Egyptian sellers, and be sure you are comparing the same model — the same capacity, the same year, the same variant. Local listings are often a slightly different specification.

3. Compare like for like, including what you are giving up. Buying locally gets you the thing today, with a local warranty and somewhere to return it. Buying from abroad gets you two to three weeks and, usually, no practical return. That difference has a value, and it is not zero.

4. Decide. If the gap is under about 10% in favour of importing, buy it here. The waiting and the lack of a return are worth more than 10%.

Where importing usually wins

Things that do not exist here. No comparison to make. The choice is the landed price or not having it.

Dense, expensive things. Electronics, watches, cameras, perfume. The multiple is low because these are small and valuable, and the Egyptian markup on them is often high.

Specific variants. The colour, the size, the reference that nobody imported. The local market carries the safe selections.

Anything where the local price is set by scarcity. When one importer holds a category, the gap can be very wide.

Where buying in Egypt usually wins

Anything bulky and cheap. A large light box costs a lot to bring in relative to what is inside it. See why size changes the price.

Mainstream goods with a healthy local market. Common phone models, standard appliances, everyday clothing. Competition here has closed the gap on most of it.

Anything you need soon. Two to three weeks is the honest expectation.

Anything you will lean on a warranty for. A big appliance or a main laptop, bought abroad, means you own any failure.

There is a fuller list of the cases where we tell people not to bother in what not to buy from abroad.

One thing people forget to include

When you compare, make sure the local price you are using is a *final* price and the imported one is too.

Buying from abroad yourself usually means a price at checkout plus an import charge later — an estimate, settled after the fact, sometimes higher than quoted. That second number belongs in your comparison, and its uncertainty belongs there too.

Every price XOONX gives is one final figure in Egyptian pounds with customs already inside, and XOONX carries the customs risk: if it costs us more than we expected, that is our problem, not a bill at your door. When you compare against a local price, you are comparing two numbers that both mean the same thing, which is the only way the comparison is worth anything.

If the answer is "buy it here"

Then buy it here. We would rather tell you that and keep you as somebody who trusts what we say than take an order you regret. Enough of what people ask us for is genuinely better bought abroad that we do not need the rest.

To test a specific item: the calculator for an estimate in a minute, or send us the link for a real fixed price from a person, usually within hours.

Want the number for the thing you actually want?

Send us the link and a person comes back with one fixed final price in Egyptian pounds — everything included, nothing to pay at your door.
